Ebook About Molly McKenzie's bright personality and on-trend fashion and beauty advice have earned her an impressive social media following, as well as a shiny monthly paycheck. When her manager-turned-boyfriend tells her of an upcoming audition to host a makeover show for America's underprivileged youth, all her dreams finally seem to be coming true. There's just one catch: she has little experience interacting with people in need. To gain an edge on her competitors, she applies to volunteer at a transitional program for aged-out foster kids during summer, only the program's director, Silas Whittaker, doesn't find her as charming as her followers do. But since forfeiting a goal has never been her style, Molly's only option is to accept the terms Silas lays out and submit to his rules--even the most ridiculous ones pertaining to social media. Soon as the residents of the home become more than a means to pad her career resume, and Silas becomes more than an obstacle on her path to fame, her once-narrow focus expands to include the deep needs of those she's serving... and perhaps the ones she's neglected inside herself as well. It took years to build her platform, but only one summer to discover what really matters most.Book All That Really Matters Review :
166 I was a bit skeptical of All That Really Matters. I expected Molly to be a certain type of character who got into certain types of situations, and I expected the same from Silas and other characters. In other words, I thought, "This will be a trope-heavy book I've seen a million times." Wow, was I wrong, and so happy to be proven wrong!Molly and Silas do have a bit of the Maria Rainer/Captain von Trapp thing going on, in that she gets him to lighten up and he gets her to recognize some shallowness and hiding behind externals in her life. However, both are three-dimensional, different takes on their "types." As Silas and others note many times, Molly is the personification of brightness. She's sanguine and overly eager sometimes, but also determined and open to learning. And while Silas comes off as a stereotypical rule-following, all-business youth home director, his gentler human side comes through clearly without his manliness being compromised. His history with Carlos in particular gives Silas gravitas, but it comes off as realistic, not hokey or a throwaway reason for why Silas runs The Bridge. The Bridge itself is drawn beautifully and feels like home to characters and readers. At first, I worried it was going to be a little institutional, as when young adults were offered rewards from snack closets. But Silas, Glo, and the other staff members strike a balance between expecting respect for the rules, and relating to their charges as adults who have been through more than life hands most people. I wanted to spend as much time as possible around these young adults and staff. I wanted to come to D&D and glam night. I loved watching Molly's girls grow, and loved watching Molly grow with them. And I enjoyed getting to know Glo, Clara, and others, whose roles might not get expanded on in other books.I loved Molly's journey during the book, too. She does learn about "what really matters," and again, that could've been hokey. But what I loved is that Nicole Deese made clear, there is a place for people like Molly in the world. They are needed and wanted, and their talents can be used as ministry. I felt for Molly when she compared herself to her parents and Miles, and especially when she revealed that her parents often treated her as second-best because of her beauty- and social media-based interests. Molly never came off as shallow or a grown-up, clothes-obsessed "mean girl." In fact, during a couple of climactic scenes with Wren, she shows brilliant examples of sincere, Christ-like love without being false or preachy.Speaking of those scenes...whew! I hit those climactic scenes in the middle of the night and stayed up longer than I should, racing to read them and find out what happened. Molly's relationships with Wren and Monica jerked my heartstrings there, partially because those relationships had grown so much already. I also loved seeing Molly try to break through to Sasha and relate to the other girls, like Jasmine and Amy. Several smaller scenes within the book, such as when Molly makes Silas tamales or gives Glo some heels, really make the book "pop."Finally, the spiritual threads in All That Really Matters are spot on. Yes, there is some discussion of social media covering up who we really are, and Nicole handles it great. But what I loved even more were discussions of friendship and how it can hurt to lose a friend, how God values us in ways we cannot imagine, and how He has a ministry and purpose for everyone, whether that's running a youth home or writing novels or, maybe, heading up a social media phenomenon.I almost didn't want All That Really Matters to end, but I guess it had to so Nicole can write more books. I'm coming to respect and look forward to her work; she may soon become one of those authors I read regardless of her next plot. In the meantime, I recommend this book as one that will give you a great balance of fun, romance, and life lessons.
